 Let Us Give Thanks

It is the season to give thanks.  In the spirit of the holiday season, I would like to thank you for all the great things that have happened already during this fraternal year.  Your council’s support of the programs of the Order…Supreme Council, Ohio State Council and local council activities… all illustrate what the Knights of Columbus is about.  Please continue the good work across the Ohio State Council. 

Hopefully, local council leaders are working toward Planning for Success (the theme of my Buckeye Bulletin articles), and everything is in place for a great 2009 fraternal year.  All councils should be scheduling and planning activities, promoting membership, and reporting to the Ohio State Council on what has been accomplished.   

The positive scoreboard highlights continue for the Following in Their Footsteps state general program:

As of this writing, membership is currently at 27% of Ohio’s Supreme quota.  (Thank you!)  Please follow through on suggestions made from State Membership Director Larry Droesch.  Another goal is 200 new members before Christmas; participate in the “Knight before Christmas” membership activity.

·  Collectively, we have reached several goals in membership, but we need to continue to spread Columbianism throughout Ohio.   Membership is the key to the growth of the Order.  Last year we reached the 60,000 membership benchmark during February.  I know that the Dynamo would like to reach 61,000 members in Ohio by the end of April.  With the help of the local councils, and in particular the district deputies, we can reach the Supreme 100% for another year. 

·  Hopefully, suspensions can be minimal.  Again, please remember that before a member is to be suspended, there needs to be personal contact made and the proper procedure must be followed for the suspension to officially take place. 

·  There is one new council currently on the books with others in developing stages.  Our Supreme quota in Ohio is ten (10). 

·  Hopefully, all council leaders will report their council activities with the “Following in Their Footsteps” general program.  Let’s work toward a 100% participation of all local councils. 

·  Thank you also to all councils who participated in the 2008 Football Frenzy.  Again, your support was greatly appreciated.  Now let’s allow the season play out to see who is holding one of the 100 plus winning tickets.   Good luck!

In closing, I am asking local council leaders (and especially Grand Knights) to make sure that the Plan for Success “plan” is in place NOW as the fraternal year continues.  Let’s follow in the footsteps of Father McGivney and make 2009 ANOTHER successful year.

 Some “What ifs”

By the time this is published both the presidential election will have been completed and effects of the recent banking and financial messes should have become clearer.  These can give us reason to reflect on a few “what ifs.” 

What if candidates who share our values for the defense of life win and then laws which protect the lives of the unborn become the law of the land?  Are we ready?  Can we step up and provide the extra care needed for more pregnancies being brought to full term?  As we approach the Advent and Christmas seasons -- seasons focused on the birth of Jesus -- hopefully we would give a resounding “yes” to that third question.  Hopefully even now any time a woman says to us that she’s pregnant and needs help bringing her child to term -- whether she needs social, emotional or financial support -- we don’t hesitate to do what we can and/or point her to where the resources are available for her.  

What if the battle for the rights of the unborn is about to get more difficult?  Do we have the resolve to keep going?  Perhaps in our recruiting of the next generation of Knights, we can tap into their awareness that they are “survivors of Roe v. Wade,” and their unique historical perspective can help to energize our own perseverance for the development of laws and supportive resources which promote a Culture of life. 

What if our economy is in for some more difficult times?  Can we continue to be charitable and generous with fewer financial resources?  Can we express better gratitude when people do support our K of C causes?  Can we be emotionally supportive of each other if incomes drop or good jobs are more difficult to find?

Naturally it is more difficult to have to ask for support than to give it.  Hopefully being part of the Knights of Columbus brotherhood can make either of those prospects more manageable. 

Perhaps we will be a little better able to keep Christ in Christmas this year!  Not having as much extra income for elaborate gifts can help us to keep the focus on either simple gifts that express our love or on the original meaning of Christmas and Jesus’ birth.  Gifts which help each other grow in faith are always among the best gifts, even if they don’t have the same glitz as the newest electronic gadget. 

Interestingly, Jesus was asleep in the stern of the boat while a storm was raging around he and his disciples on the Sea of Galilee (Mark 4:35-41).  This was both to show his complete trust in the care of God the Father and the Holy Spirit and to give him an opportunity, once he was awakened by the disciples, to show that he has authority over chaos.

May we, too, experience within the unfolding of historical and national events which impact us locally opportunities to turn to the Lord, draw peace from his own peace and give God glory by the support we give each other and our community as Brother Knights.

Former State Chaplain Fr. John Hiltz dies;   initiated Ohio’s Matching Funds Campaign


 As State Chaplain in 1975-1977, Fr. John T. Hiltz provided the impetus for starting the Ohio State Council’s Matching Funds Campaign, whereby the Ohio Charity Foundation matches council donations up to $25,000 to support Catholic education in the state. Since its inception, more than $2 million has been donated to religious education directors in the six Ohio dioceses to purchase audio-visual medium for teaching in schools, parish schools of religion and instruction of adults preparing for baptism.

Fr. Hiltz passed away last Oct. 13 in Yorba Linda, Calif., following declining health in the last few years. He was 81.

Fr. Hiltz served as State Chaplain during the administration of State Deputy Donald Wheeler, of Norwalk. At the time he was serving as Director of Religious Education for the Toledo Diocese.

“Fr. Hiltz was one of the best motivational speakers I have ever heard,” reflected Robert E. Sears, who served as State Deputy in 1981-1983. “I always have said you learn something from every State Chaplain, and I will never forget him as a caring, fun-loving educator.”

Following graduation from Norwalk High School, Fr. Hiltz studied at Xavier University, Cincinnati; Stanford University Law College, and the Catholic University in Washington D.C. prior to entering St. Mary’s Seminary in Maryland. He was ordained into the priesthood in 1959.

He served as a priest of the Toledo Diocese in Bluffton, Columbus Grove and Lima parishes; taught at Lima Central Catholic High School; became Director of Religious Education for the diocese, and was on the National Board of Directors of Religious Education.

In 1986, he transferred to California, where he was the associate pastor of St. Martin’s Church in Yorba Linda. In addition, he continued his lecturing and educational efforts, concentrating on marriage counseling and marriage preparation. While in California, he spearheaded the construction of two Catholic churches in Mexico. In recent years he was chaplain of the Orange County Chapter of Legatus, an international organization of Catholic chief executive officers.

Supreme Knight Anderson visits Columbus, speaks at the St. Charles Borromean Lecture

 Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson was in Columbus on Nov. 6 as guest lecturer at the Annual St. Charles Preparatory School’s Borromean Lecture.

His presentation centered around love and concern for others – eliciting thoughts from his book, A Civilization of Love. Anderson cited the on-going financial problems in the United States, posing the question, “Would those things have happened if those in charge would have had concern for those persons who lost their homes, their jobs?”

He talked about the dedication of New York firefighters who braved the 9/11 tragedy to remain in the burning buildings, helping others. “They were told to leave the building, but they didn’t,” he said. “It was love for their neighbor that they stayed. They went beyond duty.”

He stressed that “I’ve concluded that the vocation of love is a most masculine virtue. Love is a motivating principle.”

“Are we willing to commit ourselves, to move forward, help others who are in need?” he asked.

Responding to a question about the recent general election, Anderson stated that Catholic families must continue to stand firm on Pro-Life issues. “What issue could be more important?” he suggested. “We must stand unafraid. We want to build a culture of life, not a culture of death.”

“We need to be creative,” he continued. “We need to be courageous – not breaking the law, but finding ways of getting our message out to those who are not listening.”

St. Charles Preparatory School, founded in 1923 and operated by the Diocese of Columbus, maintains its focus on classical Catholic teaching devoted to attracting boys from all economic and geographic backgrounds in Central Ohio. It’s enrollment in grades 9-12 is 601.

The Borromean Lecture was established in 2000 to honor St. Charles Borromeo, the school’s patron, attracting speakers of national renown on topics of morals and ethics in society, business and government.

Hennepin Province honors Cleveland  priest as Sir Knight of the Year

 A priest from the Cleveland Diocese Fourth Degree Lt. McManus Assembly 811 was honored as Sir Knight of the Year of the Hennepin Province, and Ohio’s George Bodajlo, Jr., was installed as the new master of District I at the annual provincial meeting held in Detroit, Mich., on the weekend of Sept. 27-28.

Honored as Sir Knight of the Year was Fr. Pascal Petcavage, Faithful Friar of Lt. McManus Assembly in Lorain County. Fr. Petcavage also is Chaplain of Our Lady of Charity Council 14406, which he founded last year. The council is located at Assumption Parish in Broadview Heights. For a number of years he also was “assistant chaplain” to Father Ragan Council 3269, Avon. Fr. Petcavage has served in various capacities as a priest, most recently with the Congregation of St. Joseph, a teaching order, and currently with the Order of St. Benedict, St. Andrew Abbey, Cleveland.

Fr. Petcavage had been recognized as Sir Knight of the Year of Ohio’s District I. Anthony Roark, of Most Holy Rosary Assembly 2170, Harrison (Cincinnati Diocese), was honored as Sir Knight of the Year of District II. Jerry Lowery, of Pope John Paul II Assembly, Pickerington (Columbus Diocese) was honored as Sir Knight of the Year of District III.

Bodajlo has been active in Knights of Columbus work in the Youngstown Diocese for many years. He served as District Deputy Coordinator during the administration of State Deputy John O. Welch. He also has served as State Squires Director and as District Deputy Coordinator for the Youngstown Diocese. Bodajlo and his wife, Donna, reside in Niles.

Other Ohio masters are David Hoffman, of Toledo, District II; and Francesco Iannaggi, of Reynoldsburg, District III.

Another Hennepin Province award announced by Vice Supreme Master George Mallison, of Michigan, was the best assembly newsletter, which went to Moses Cleveland Assembly 800.

Among dignitaries in attendance at the weekend meeting were State Deputy Larry Moegling and his wife, Mary Lou, and State Secretary Paul Upman and his wife, Lee.

The Hennepin Province is comprised of Fourth Degree assemblies in Ohio and Michigan.

Special projects involve Youngstown Diocese Knights

Knights of the Youngstown Diocese have been involved with special projects in 2008, including a trip to K of C headquarters in New Haven, Conn.; a traveling icon program which grew out of a welcome to new diocese Bishop George Mury, and an art show titled Christopher Columbus: Man of Courage, Man of Faith. The show including unveiling of a collectible plate in custom mounting depicting Our Lady of Guadalupe which was being sent to First Lady Laura Bush. It also included five items on loan from the K of C Museum in New Haven and items from local K of C councils.

The projects were coordinated by Brother Knight Beri Berardi, a former field agent in western Pennsylvania and Youngstown. He is a member of the Order’s first council, San Salvador Council 1 in New Haven.


A Christmas season project:  cheer up our veterans

 Here’s a great idea for the Christmas season, perhaps a council, assembly or Squires circle project – or even something that could be done as a school class project.

Help cheer up our veterans who are confined to Veterans Administration (V.A.) hospitals and homes.

There are many veterans who never receive even one Christmas card.

Collect cards. For example, we often receive them in the mail from various organizations; or you can buy extra ones. Turn them into something meaningful and help brighten a veteran’s holiday season. Have Brother Knights, family members – especially children – write a short note and sign the card, thanking that veteran for their service and wish them a Merry Christmas. The cards can be addressed to “A Special Veteran”.

Cards should be collected and sent to your area veterans chairman, or to State Veterans Director John Whytal. These men will see that the cards are distributed to our hospitalized veterans and those in other facilities as well. Their addresses are:

Supreme Convention delegate from Ohio explains

 Culture of Life Fund to parish

 District Deputy-13 Walter Amrein (Cincinnati Diocese), spoke during Mass at his home parish in Harrison shortly after his return from Quebec City, Canada, where he attended the 2008 Supreme Convention as a delegate, offering insight into the Culture of Life Fund which was established there. Following are excerpts from his talk, which were given prior to the November general election.

“I am not here to ask for money. I am going to ask you for a more valuable and less expensive commodity. That is prayer.

“Recently, I was an elected delegate to the Supreme Convention of the Knights of Columbus, representing the 11 counties in the southern part of the Archdiocese.

“At this convention a resolution was passed to assess members a nominal amount of money. This would be matched by the Supreme Office of the Knights of Columbus. The purpose of the assessment is to establish a legal defense fund entitled, “The Culture of Life Fund.”  It will also be used to further defend the Pro Life movement and certain types of stem cell research.

“The Knights have requested and been granted permission by the courts to be a party to the lawsuits in California in support of the defense of the Institution of Marriage. Recently, the California legislature passed a law allowing same sex marriages. This November there is a bill on the ballot to define that marriage must be between a man and woman. Ministers, rabbis and all the bishops in California have come out in support of this legislation.

“As most of you know, a priest or minister is licensed to officiate at the marriage ceremony by the State. Should a same sex couple request a priest to officiate at such a ceremony and he refuses, he could have his license revoked. This is the circumstance that presently exists in California. Pray that this radical culture of life does not spread across America.

“What I am asking from you today is prayer. Pray for a Culture of Life in our country and countries across the world. Pray to the patron of our country, the Blessed Mother. Pray to Her on a daily basis.”

Supreme Council gives details on Culture of Life Fund assessment

Supreme Secretary Donald R. Kehoe has spelled out the method in which $3.00 assessments will be implemented for the Culture of Life Fund, which was approved unanimously by delegates to the 2008 Supreme Convention in Quebec, Canada.

In a letter to all members, Kehoe states that the assessment is based on the Oct. 1, 2008, membership of each council in the Order. This assessment can be paid in full by Jan. 31, 2009, or in installments due by Jan. 31, 2009, and July 31, 2009. The assessment is determined as follows:

·  Total membership of the council.

·  Minus Honorary members.

·  Minus Honorary Life members.

·  Minus Disability members.

·  Minus Inactive Insurance members.

Kehoe said the resolution also encourages members, councils, assemblies and state councils throughout the Order “to affirm their commitment to marriage, family and the gift of life through additional voluntary contributions to the Culture of Life Fund”.

“One idea for councils is thinking that this assessment might be paid through different ways than automatically raising dues,” suggested State Deputy Larry Moegling. “Think of a fundraising project that could eliminate the assessment from individual members.”

Kehoe further stated that “Councils are encouraged to conduct activities which can contribute to support the Culture of Life Fund. These additional donations should be made through a separate check made payable to the Knights of Columbus and in the memo section list `Culture of Life Fund’. The checks should be sent to Knights of Columbus, One Columbus Plaza, New Haven, CT 06510-3326. Attention: Culture of Life Fund.



“Councils should establish fundraising projects toward the Culture of Life Fund assessment. Make it a pro-active, Catholic-action project -- even a spaghetti dinner -- to raise money to promote Catholicity.

“The Supreme Knight commented that `if we truly hope for a Culture of Life and a Civilization of Love, then we must first think, and then act, in new ways’.”

2008 Matching Funds Campaign nears end

 The 2008 Matching Funds Campaign, Shine a Light on Catholic Education, is nearing completion. As of Nov. 10, more than $25,000 has been received from 188 councils, assemblies, chapters and Squires circles.

“We hope to hear from more councils, assemblies and Squires Circles as we close out the campaign,” said State Advocate Ken Girt, Matching Funds chairman. “Our Ohio Charity Foundation will again “match” all contributions up to the first $25,000 received before Nov. 15. But additional funds certainly will be accepted.”

A check for the collected amount from each diocese will be presented to each Religious Education Director of the six Ohio dioceses at the Mid-year District Deputies Meeting in Columbus on Jan. 10.  A number of recognition awards also will be presented to our District Deputies for distribution to their councils.

Matching Funds contributions are a mandatory “step” in the Following in Their Footsteps Church Activities Program.

 Start now to plan for 2009 Super Cash Bonanza

The 2009 Super Cash Bonanza may be a few months away, but it’s not too early to strategize for the new campaign.

“Partnering with another non-profit organization, such as a parish youth group or school booster club, has proven successful for many councils,” said 2009 Chairman and State Treasurer Dave Helmstetter. “Making such contacts should be done now. Many of the top-selling councils in Ohio partner, and the results have benefited many local charitable causes. Good planning leads to a great campaign.”

The Super Cash Bonanza road show dates will be announced following the Mid-Year District Deputies’ Meeting in January. The road shows, which kick off the campaign in each diocese, will take place in February.

Don’t forget those Pennies Dollars for Heaven


Keep passing those jugs; keep having special fundraisers to generate pennies dollars for Ohio’s Pennies for Heaven Campaign.

That’s the advice of State Secretary Paul Upman, chairman of the 2008-2009 Pennies for Heaven Campaign. Collections are given to vocations directors in the dioceses in which they are collected, to be used to help priestly and other religious vocations.

This year’s goal is an ambitious one: $100,000. A total of $79,020 was collected in 2007-2008.

Councils, assemblies and Squires circles are asked to send their mid-year collections to Upman by mid-December. The final donations can be sent next April-May. The collections can be sent to: Paul Upman, 4838 Skipper Ct., Maumee, OH 43537.

Use your Chapter to help recruit members

Just about all our dioceses have Knights of Columbus chapters that meet separately and are designed to be a networking and communication tool for local councils. Each council in a geographical area is able to send a delegate or two and pay dues to the chapter treasurer. Many times this is a great way to talk about successes and issues with other members and officers from other councils, even though it does involve another pesky meeting. Overall, the chapter concept works in most places, but can become a detriment -- especially if you are a small rural council that has to travel long distances to get to meetings. 

So what can a chapter do for membership?

I hear every week how some councils struggle with getting new members while some have success in recruiting members. The No. 1 benefit of a chapter coincides with the first two principles of our order – Charity and Unity. SHARE your successes and ideas. That’s Charity It can help struggling councils come up with new ideas to attract candidates or assist them in dodging pitfalls that can plague a council. In addition, why not share your degree teams, offer your facilities, or give your neighboring councils some extra Form 100’s or brochures. Perhaps one of the members of the chapter is an expert in a certain area or is a state director or state officer who can come and speak at council  membership drives or assist the councils in other ways.

WORK TOGETHER. That’s Unity. It can get much more done for a council than just one person. Host membership events, such as a festival booth, a joint fundraiser to help with costs associated with membership, holding a first, second, or third degree in your area. Perhaps your Chapter can form its own degree team to help the councils in the chapter to have more degrees that don’t require long travel. There could also be current degree team members that can help out by subbing at a degree.

It’s worth the money and time it takes to attend a chapter meeting and to be a member. The benefits are endless. Set aside all the politics and join a chapter, or get your current chapter to practice Charity and Unity to increase the membership now and in the future!


Dynamo Digest

It’s that time again for the dynamic world report from the Dynamo!

·      There is a lot of action going on in NCD but nothing is showing up on paper. All dioceses in the State have at least one new council prospect in motion. Gabriel and I expect to see one new council in November, December and January. This will certainly help everyone involved. I remind everyone that if you think of a parish that may want a new council, PLEASE CALL GABRIEL before talking to anyone else!

·      Revitalization is working also. I appreciate all the M/R D’s and the DD’s who are working the program properly and making a difference one council at a time. If your council has not completed the ‘Council Review Checklist’ with your District Deputy, please call them one last time to get that set up. This checklist is an eye opening tool that will help even the #1 council in the State be a better council and involve their members much more! If you need help getting this checklist and cannot reach your DD, please call me 937-383-3680 and I will get you set up and started.

·      The new Form 100’s should have been sent to your FS or GK by now. These new membership forms are 8.5 X 11, have a section for the Admission Committee (essentially a questionnaire), and a place to sign up for the New Member Annuity. All old green Form 100’s are to be destroyed after December 31st because the old New Member Insurance Policy cannot be sold after the end of 2008.

·      Today (11-11-08) has Ohio at 26.5% of our quota, 21st out of 73 Jurisdictions, and at YTD Net of 385. As today is Veteran’s Day, let’s remember to do Activity #61 Recruit One Who Serves and to round out the calendar year, don’t forget #57 A Knight Before Christmas.

Success Story #7

Cuyahoga Falls council uses unique promotion


This story comes from Immaculate Heart of Mary Council #13517, Cuyahoga Falls (Cleveland Diocese). It involves a portion of the council’s 2008 Membership Drive.

Get Three: You’re Free was the name of the promotion and this was promoted within the council along with the Shining Armor Award and council newsletter announcements. The last two are self-explanatory, but this unique promotion was very simple and successful. Beginning July 1, if a member signs up or reactivates three members, their next year’s dues are waived. It is running from July 1-December, 2008, and already has helped the council meet its October Blitz requirement and has identified more than five other candidates that the council will bring to a First Degree in the next month or so.

This is a great success story, and hopefully it will inspire other councils to try unique promotions to boost their membership.

Blitz and McGivney Results

The October, 2008, Blitz was successful.  We had 44 districts out of 74 participating, bringing in 227 new members and 14 reactivations. As a comparison, in 2007 we had 52 districts participating. Also last year we had 110 councils participate vs. only 96 councils this year. I wish to thank all the Councils and District Deputies who participated and turned in their information.

 2008 Fr. McGivney Incentive:  We had 28 councils participate, which is much lower than last year. Obviously, the change in the rules and the pay-out had much to do with it. The winning Grand Knights from each diocese are:

 · Council 4603 (Columbus Diocese), Grand Knight Robert G. Neider.

· Council 4731 (Cleveland Diocese), Grand Knight James Sanzi.

Reports received after the reporting period deadline will be recorded in the following reporting period. Anotherwords, if you filed a program report after the Sepetember-October deadline, your report will be recorded with the November-December reports that are received.

However, reports received one or more periods late will be recorded as “late”. Full points will be awarded for these late reports, but they are used in tiebreaker decisions for possible top state awards.

The message is this: Please send your reports in a timely manner, observed the posted deadlines.

I am truly blessed to read all the different activities that council’s are doing within their parishes and communities to extend their help and hard work on behalf of our Order for our Catholic faith. Please report and let me know what you are doing in your council. Please also document your activities with printed materials and photos.

I also would like to thank Brother Jerome Lessard, of Bishop McFadden Council 3777, North Canton. In the July-August issue of the Buckeye Bulletin I was letting everyone know that we had changed the criteria for nominating a Religious of the Year and that we are now including Priests. Previously, the only way a council could honor a priest was as Chaplain of the Year. Under the new rules, any priest can be nominated as Religious of the Year, as long as he is not your Chaplain. If he is your Chaplain, he must be nominated as Chaplain of the Year. I went further to say that we have other religious -- deacons and sisters – who also can be considered for the Religious of the Year Award. My apologies to Brother Lessard and all of our other fine Brothers. A Brother can be nominated as a candidate for Religious of the Year. I want to thank Brother Lessard for bringing this to my attention.

The Matching funds checks were due in to our State Advocate Ken Girt by November 15th. If you have not yet sent your Council’s donation, please do so to receive credit.

Community Activities

Giving back to the community

Thanksgiving ….. Christmas! What a time to give something back to your community.

Consider a special dinner, or a clothing drive at your council hall for the less fortunate within your community.  At this time of the year there will be many needy persons out there looking for warm clothing and a good meal during the upcoming holidays. Think about making this a joint project with other councils in your area.

In order to make this project a success, anything you can do to help the less fortunate within your community can and will help.

Now, that I have you thinking about that project, let’s consider doing something for our veterans.  Look around. I’m sure there are many in your community who have nothing. Councils that have Veterans Administration (VA) homes in their areas could provide assistance there.

As I’m writing this, my wife is taking a look at our winter jackets.  WOW. I can’t believe I’ve kept several that never will fit me again. Clean out your closets. There are several organizations that will take your old winter clothes. AMVETS is one of them.

Just think: if every Knights of Columbus member would donate one coat or jacket, it would mean donations of 60,000 coats! That would keep plenty of our needy veterans – and others – warm.

Finally, starting looking around your council, or community, for a Volunteer of  the Year and a Blue Coat of the Year.

It’s a great time for a council social

With the Holidays upon us, Step #26 -- Council Social -- is the right place to report the well-attended gathering that the council has experienced.  Be sure to include as much information as possible with your report.

If a social gathering is not in the works, this a great time to show how much the Ladies of the council are appreciated with Step #25 -- Ladies Appreciation Night.  Make it a night they soon will not forget, since for all councils, they truly are the wind beneath our wings.

I would just like to extend to all the Brothers and their families a Most Blessed Christmas Season and the grandest New Year to each and every one of you from myself and my wife Kelley.

Family Activities

Involve Holy Family at Christmas time

Make the Holy Family the center of your council’s Christmas celebration.

Many Ohio councils hold some type of Christmas celebration as part of their Family Activities program.  Whether it is an adult party, children's party, or both, don't forget that the reason for the season is the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ, and the institution of the Holy Family.

Santa Claus, gifts, food and drink are all part of Christmas, but when your council plans its holiday activities, be sure to invite the Holy Family to the festivities.  It is our job as members of the Knights of Columbus to remind our community, parish, and our own family members what the true meaning of Christmas is.  There are many ways a council can accomplish this, some suggestions are:

·  Make the crčche the centerpiece of your councils Christmas celebration.

·  Distribute Keep Christ in Christmas bumper stickers or car magnets to your council families.

·  Sing religious-based Christmas carols at your council Christmas event.

·  Give a Nativity scene as a gift to the children of your council.

·  Include an Advent Wreath at all council events during the holiday season.

·  Participate in the Supreme Council "Light Up for Christ" program.

These are just a few suggestions, I am sure that your council can use one of these, several of these, or come up with your own ideas.  Don't forget to report your council's family Christmas celebration on your November-December program report that is due Jan. 1, 2009.

Pro-Life Activities

36th Annual March for Life just ahead

The majority of presidential voters leaned in the wrong direction -- away from the pro-life candidate – and elected the one who has vowed to end 30 years of progress in the battle to reverse the heinous 1973 Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion throughout the United States and through all nine months of pregnancy.

The cause for life has suffered a crushing defeat. Fifty million babies already have died. How many millions more now are in danger?

We, as Knights, have to ramp up our efforts to defend the defenseless to an even higher level.

One of the best ways to demonstrate to the nation and the world our commitment is to attend the 36th Annual National March for Life in Washington D.C. The 2009 event is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 22.

If your council, or another pro-life organization, is sponsoring a bus trip to Washington, please provide me with the details. My goal is to distribute a list of excursions to councils statewide, via email to District Deputies, for the benefit of those who would like to participate.

Youth Activities

It’s time to plan for your Free Throw

It’s time to turn our attention to the next major State Youth Activities Program, The Ohio Knights of Columbus Free Throw Contest. Even though it may seem a long way off, a lot of preparation is needed to be successful. Remember, “a well-planned event” tends to be the most successful.

·  Now is the time to order your free throw kit from Supreme (FT-KIT).

·  Now is the time to reserve a gym for the competition.

·  Now is the time to recruit volunteers to help run the event.

·  Now is the time to talk with area basketball coaches and program coordinators to advertise your event.

A “Big Thank You” to all the councils that have chosen to participate in the new Order-wide Knights of Columbus/Boy Scouts of America initiative supported by the Ohio State Council. A number of councils have reported active participation with area scouting units, ranging from joint fund-raisers, service projects, Eagle Court Programs and the sponsoring of two new scouting units. It’s not too late for your council to actively engage in sponsoring a scouting unit or inviting the scouts to participate in a service project with your council (Step #55). Give it some thought!

Finally, a heart-felt “thank you” to the work being done by councils with Squires Circles. Middletown Council 1610 (Cincinnati Diocese) reported sponsoring a new circle at Bishop Fenwick High School.

We must never forget the positive impact that our Squires program has had on young men over the years. Let’s support existing circles and continue to actively work on establishing new circles this fraternal year.

Remember the words of our beloved Former State Chaplain and long-time State Father Prior, Fr. F. Richard Snoke: “ Our youth are our future. Work with them, teach them and encourage them to be the best that they can be.”

And let me add, “…so that someday they can follow in our footsteps.”

Squires Activities

Our Ohio Squires are on the move

Thanks to all councils that are showing an activity interest in Columbian Squires and Boy Scouts.

The state squires are on the move. We have re-instituted a circle at West Toledo Council, the sponsor for Danny Thomas Circle # 3961.

The first school-based circle was instituted on Oct. 5, 2008, at Bishop Fenwick High School in Middletown. The John Paul II Circle is sponsored by Middletown Council 1610. At this writing we are awaiting Supreme to issue an official number.

Due to the efforts of individuals working on starting the above circle, they also have contacted two additional high schools and both are interested in starting circles in their schools.

Thank you to all Knights who are working with Squires and scouts for your dedication to our youth.

Guaranteed Issued Life Policy

Do you, as a Knights of Columbus member, have a chronic illness?  What about your spouse?  Are both, or either, of you under the age of 65?  Do you have some of your plans unfulfilled?

Well, as of Oct. 1, 2008, we in our new product series have made available a guaranteed issue whole life policy.  The ages that may apply for these policies range from 18 to 65.  A $5,000 available for ages 18-65, and a $7,500 for ages 18-54.  Please note that age limits and that face amount limits being offered.

We agents are looking forward to insuring those members and spouses who have been uninsurable.  We may not know who you are, but you can apply for this particular plan of coverage now. Call your Field Agent or General Agent. If you don’t know who he is, go to the web site, click on find an agent and put in your Zip Code.  It will give you a name and phone number to call.

Did you know that we have been insuring our member’s children born with disabilities for a long time? An example would be born mentally challenged, Down Syndrome or any birth defect leaving that child uninsurable. The amount of this policy is $5,000.

District Deputies

It’s time to find Free Throw sites

As we take pleasure in the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons, may we also take this opportunity to stop and think about all the blessings we have been given. I pray that this will be a special time for you and your families.

Important Information:  The District Free Throw medallions will be ordered by the State Deputy and sent directly to me. They will be distributed at the District Deputies Meeting in Columbus in January. You will not need to place an order for the medallions yourself. If, however, you have already ordered your medallions, they will not be sent to you, but will follow the above directive. Your District Free Throw is to be held during the first two weeks in February, 2008. It may be a good idea to take the time now to reserve the space to hold your competition. Please send the forms of the winners to the regional director immediately following your district competition. (It’s a good idea to make copies for yourself and keep them on hand.)

Also, at this time you need to contact your councils and order your rulers for the 2009 Measure-Up Campaign.

The chairman for this year’s campaign is State Warden Bob Collins. Forms should be sent to him.

DD-1 Forms for October and November are due on Dec. 1 They go to your Diocesan District Deputy Coordinator.

We also need you to prepare and send the District Deputy Semi-annual Report on Council Status by Dec. 31. These forms (944-A) will be sent to you from Supreme and you will need to fill one out for each council, even if they are inactive.

In December, you will be receiving a registration form for the mid-year District Deputy Meeting to be held Jan. 9-11 at the Hilton Columbus at Easton Center. It is important that you send in your registration early.

 Buckeye Bulletin subscriber help is needed


State Deputy Larry Moegling, with major assistance from his wife, Mary Lou, have undertaken the task of “cleaning up” the Buckeye Bulletin mailing list – a job that has not been done apparently since 1993.

“Since 1993, many of our Buckeye Bulletin subscribers have passed on, have withdrawn, have moved or been suspended, all without our knowledge,” said Moegling. “If we don’t know about a change in their status, these names and addresses were never taken off our mailing list.  In trying to keep operating costs down, this was another avenue that needed to be “addressed.”  

The first step in “cleaning up” the mailing list was to identify those subscribers who were not having the Buckeye Bulletin delivered to them. Normally, when Third Class Bulk Mailing material is not deliverable, it is thrown away, unless the U.S. Postal Service is asked to let us know.

The State Deputy decided to take action with the September-October, 2008, issue. A notice, “Address Service Requested,” was placed in the mailing label box – asking the Post Office to send back undeliverable mail.

Out of a database of more than 9,000 subscribers, more than 1,500 copies of the Buckeye Bulletin have been returned as “undeliverable,” meaning the addressee no longer lives at the address on the mailing label.  Address corrections were supplied for only a couple hundred of returned newspapers.   Mary Lou Moegling is currently making these changes to the database. 


So the mailing list is being “cleaned up.”  And now the Ohio State Council officers are studying ways to keep it cleaned up.

“To accomplish that, we need to enlist the cooperation of our District Deputies and council officers,” suggests Moegling. “Specifically, we need them to let us know when a member passes away, withdraws, moves or is suspended. That way, we can check to see if he is a Buckeye Bulletin subscriber. And if he is, we can delete his address from the mailing list.”

Notification of status changes should be sent to Buckeye Bulletin Editor Harding Christ – either to his home at 32649 Surrey Lane, Avon Lake, OH 44012-1642, or via his email:

If changes of address are forwarded, the full, 9-digit Zip Code needs to be included.

“We can’t keep our mailing list up to date unless we’re notified about changes of status,” emphasizes Moegling.

By the same token, Brother Knights in Ohio can – if they wish – subscribe to the Buckeye Bulletin free of charge.  (During the month of September, there were over 40 subscription requests.)  It is mailed seven times during the fraternal year. To subscribe, all Knights have to do is send their name and address – complete with the full, 9-digit Zip Code – to Editor Harding Christ.  It’s as easy as that!
